A mom is changing her cue baby diaper on the bed

Choosing the best disposable diapers is a very important thing for most moms. Some mothers love them for their convenience and superior moisture absorption. Some mothers detest them because they can interfere with toilet training.

Whichever side of the debate you are on, we can all agree that disposable diapers are the greatest parenting invention of the modern era.

Changing disposable diapers is a breeze. No messy cleanup, no extra laundry loads to worry about and no walking around with stinky diapers when you’re out and about.

Instead of spending valuable time fussing with a cloth diaper, you get to focus on what matters most: your baby. They grow up in a heartbeat, so why not cherish every second of infancy?

Disposable diapers are amazing, but it’s not as simple as walking up to a supermarket aisle and picking any package from the shelves. There are a couple of things you need to take into consideration. For instance, what diaper size is right for your baby? Will your baby need to wear a different diaper at night? Does your baby need a hypoallergenic diaper?

This article shall give you all the answers you need.

Any first-time mother can quickly feel overwhelmed in a supermarket aisle. There are tons of diaper brands to choose from, and all bear different features as well as different price tags. Underneath it all, however, they all feature the same basic construction.

Disposable diapers are made from synthetic materials such as polyethylene and polyesters, better known as “Wearable Plastics.” These materials are laid down in three distinct layers, each having a specific function.

  • Topsheet: This is the uppermost layer, and it comprises the inner lining of the diaper, which is in contact with your baby's skin. The topsheet will often contain a barrier ointment which allows for reduced diaper rash, therefore, protecting the infant's sensitive skin.
  • Adsorbent Inner Layer: Just as its name suggests, this layer is designed to have superior absorption properties. It comprises superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) which can soak up as much as 30 times their weight in fluid.
  • Backsheet: This is the outermost layer of the diaper It comprises a waterproof polythene film to guard against leaks. Besides preventing leaks, this layer also helps whisk away moisture, thereby maintaining a low relative humidity on the inner part of the diaper.

To enhance the visual appeal as well as give the diaper a pleasant smell, some brands may contain dyes and fragrances. These are often designed not to irritate a baby’s sensitive skin. However, if your baby has particularly sensitive skin, then you might want to research further on these additives.

Are There Any Eco-Friendly Disposable Diapers?

One reason why the cloth diaper vs. disposable diaper debate exists is because cloth diapers are hands down the more environmentally friendly option.

However, “green” coo-friendly diapers have now entered the scene to cater to mothers who wish to reduce their ecological footprint while raising their babies. Because environmentally conscious mothers should also get to enjoy the convenience of disposable diapers, don’t you agree?

The construction of a biodegradable diaper is similar to that of traditional disposable diapers. However, there are two major differences:

  • Biodegradable materials: instead of wearable plastics, coo-friendly diapers are made from plant-based materials which decompose in a landfill. The most popular biodegradable materials used are derived from corn, wheat, and bamboo.
  • Chemical-free: true to their name, coo-friendly diapers will often shy away from using chemical additives. Such diapers will not have any chlorine, latex, dyes, or perfumes in their composition.

Because of the green movement, coo-friendly diapers are more available now than they were a couple of years ago. Many environmentally friendly mothers can easily pick one off the shelf of their local store.

The 5 Best Features in Disposable Diapers

Every baby is different, every diaper brand is different, and different brands employ different sizing system. Keeping this in mind; therefore, it might take you a while before finding the diaper that works perfects for both you and the little one

Don’t despair, though. Trying out different brands is simply part of the adventure that is motherhood. Regardless of the diaper brand you choose, here are five amazing features you should never compromise on

1. Contoured Fit

Diapers come in different sizes, and the sizing is based on the weight of the baby. Finding a diaper that gives your baby a perfect fit will prevent leaks while ensuring the baby stays comfortable while wearing the diaper.

Ideally, the best diapers will come with elastic around the legs, which give the diaper a contoured fit. A contoured fit means that the diaper will fit snugly around the baby’s legs and hips while allowing the baby to move about freely.

2. Strong, Resealable Fasteners

All diapers come with a fastener, but the means of fastening will vary between diaper brands. A fastener is simply the mechanism used to ensure the diaper stays put on your baby’s body even as they wiggle around.

Most disposable diaper fasteners are in the design of a sticky tape while others feature Velcro fasteners. Whichever the mechanism used, make sure the fastener is strong enough to be resealed. This way, when you open the diaper to check whether the baby needs changing, you can reseal it right back if the diaper doesn’t need changing.

3. Perfume Free

Fragrances are rather unnecessary in a diaper. Worse yet, some babies could be allergic to the chemicals present in the perfumes used Some companies claim to use non-allergenic perfumes, but we’d suggest staying away from any scented diapers altogether If a diaper gets stinky, simply change it, and your little one will go back to having that new baby smell.

4. Wetness Indicator

How do you know when it’s time to change your baby’s diaper? Well, many mothers with more than one child might have already mastered the art of knowing how to time diaper changes.

However, it might be much harder for first-time mums to know when it’s time for a diaper change.

Instead of stressing yourself out of your mind, why not look for diapers that come with a wetness indicator? The indicators will often be in the form of a line or a symbol, and they are placed on the exterior of the diaper.

When the diaper gets saturated, the symbol could fade, or the line indicator could change color, indicating that it’s time for changing. Note, however, that initially, you might need a trial and error period where you monitor the effectiveness of the wetness indicator.

5. Ultra-Absorbent Core

Just the same way diapers vary in the fit; different brands also vary in absorbency. Primarily, a diaper’s number one job is to keep wetness away from the baby’s skin. This is so that the baby will be protected from rashes, chaffing, and skin irritation often resulting from prolonged exposure to wetness. A good diaper should have superior absorption so that you don’t have to change the diaper every hour or so.

How to Choose The Best Disposable Diapers?

There’s a wide variety of disposable diapers in the market, and with so many choices, anyone can easily get confused. How to choose the best disposable diapers? How do you know which is the best diaper for your baby? Here are a few tips to help you navigate the diaper aisle.

1. Don’t buy in bulk

Well, at least not just yet. All babies are unique, so even the most expensive, top-of-the-line premium diaper might not work for your baby. Try out different brands first to test their absorbency, fit, leakage control, and their suitability for your baby’s skin.

2. Pay attention to comfort specifics

One rule of thumb is diapers that have a contoured fit along with stretchy elastic sides are the most comfortable. Additionally, this design is the best for leakage prevention.

3. Consider sensitive skin

Disposable diapers may contain petroleum-based lotion or aloe for lubricating the baby’s bottoms, latex, dyes, fragrances or chlorine for whitening the diapers. While such substances are meant to be helpful, some infants might be irritated or allergic to the additives used.

The challenge here is that with a new baby, you might not know what will or won’t react with their skin. To stay on the safer side, therefore, look for diapers that have a clear “fragrance-free,” “chlorine-free,” “dye-free,” or “hypoallergenic” label.

How Do You Determine the Right Diaper Sizing?

For a diaper to work effectively, it first has to fit your baby perfectly. However, any mother out there knows that finding the perfect fitting diaper is never that simple.

Why do different packages have different numberings on them, and what do all those size numbers mean?

One thing to note is that diapers are often sized according to the weight of your baby and not based on the bay’s age. Despite the many variations in diaper brands, this is one basic system most brands follow.

The smallest diaper is a new-born size, designed for babies that are up to 10Ibs in weight. After that, the numbering progresses on from size one through seven. Each size number is designed for a particular weight bracket, and this will be indicated on the package.

A diaper having a proper fit should not look crooked when you put it on or leave red marks on the bay’s thighs. This is an indication that the diaper size is too small. Additionally, it also shouldn’t ride up on your baby, covering the belly button or leave excessive gapping around the legs and waist. This is an indication that the diaper size is too large.

5 Ways You Can Save Money on Diapers

With time, as you continue using disposable diapers, you might notice that the amount of money you are spending on diapers on diapers feels quite substantial. This is especially so if you have more than one toddler in diapers at home.

So how can you save some money without sacrificing quality and convenience? We have five invaluable tips for you.

1. Bulk Buying

Bulk buying works with other household good, so why not do the same for diapers? Once you have found a diaper brand that works for you, head on to Costco and buy a couple of packages.

However, don’t go all crazy and buy too many diapers in one size. Remember that your little is growing and he’s probably growing at a faster pace than you think. So, if you buy too many diapers in one size, the baby might outgrow them before you get through the batch.

2. Clipping Coupons

One coupon may not amount to much savings, but a few coupons could make a huge difference once you start piling them up. Clipping coupons may not be your cup of tea, but they do amount to a sizable amount of savings. So, flip that newspaper and cut out whichever coupon you find.

Besides newspapers, you can also find diaper coupons on online websites, phone apps, and parenting magazines. Additionally, if you’re lucky, you could also find coupons from the very store where you purchase your diapers. In this case, the coupon will print point automatically if your diaper brand has any special offers.

3. Rewards Program

Again, if you’re lucky, your diaper brand may be offering a rewards program whereby you earn points when you execute certain tasks. It could be something as simple as making a purchase or downloading a certain phone app. As you accumulate these points, you can then redeem them for gift cards, coupons, craven free diapers. Most brands often want to reward customers for their loyalty, so check out their diaper brand website to see if they have any rewards program.

4. Ask for Larger Diaper Sizes

Have you had a baby shower? Are friends and family constantly bringing you diapers as baby gifts? Ask for diaper sizes in larger sizes, and this way, you never have to worry about your baby outgrowing a certain size while you still have several packages left. You could even go on ahead and suggest a diaper brand they should buy.

5. Don’t Shun Store-Brand Diapers

Name brand diapers are popular, but that’s not to mean store-brands can’t be just as good and far much cheaper Store-brand diapers could be great, especially when money is tight or when you’re potty training, therefore, transitioning from diapers.

How Do You Prevent A Diaper Rash?

Almost all babies will experience a diaper rash at one point or the other while wearing a diaper However, there are things you can do to eliminate the chances of a rash developing.

  • Frequent changing: Diapers are designed to have a super absorbent gel, but that's not to mean that you should let your baby stay in a soiled diaper for prolonged periods. Besides the wetness, the baby's skin could also be irritated by the natural acids present in pee and poop.
  • Proper fit: An improper fit could result in friction while the baby is wiggling around, therefore, causing rubbing and chaffing against the bay's bum. A good fit should be snug, but not too tight.
  • Gentle products: Use wipes and diapers that don't contain any chlorine, fragrances, lotions, or any other chemical additives.
  • Go-diaper-less: Every once in a while, allow your baby to air out whereby they stay without a diaper for a few hours.

How To Dispose Of Diapers?

Disposing of diapers is not as simple as throwing the soiled diaper in the trash. There is a right and wrong way of doing it and here’s the right way to dispose of a diaper:

1  Dump the solid contents of the diaper in the toilet.
2  Carefully wrap up the soiled diaper.
3  Seal the diaper in a plastic pail or container.
4  Discard the diapers in an appropriate location.
5  Wash your hands.

Many people often skip step 1, and yet this is the most important part of diaper disposal. Fecal matter is hazardous, and it shouldn’t find its way to our landfills. Dump it in the toilet instead.

What Diapering Essentials You Need?

Baby’s need constant care and so merely using diapers isn’t enough. To make your diaper routine a little easier, here are three essentials you should always have with you.

  • Diaper wipes: To clean all residue from the baby's bottoms during diaper changes. Similar to diapers, look for chemical-free and fragrance-free wipes. Most diaper name brands additionally manufacture wipes so you could get wipes in the same brand as your diapers.
  • Diaper pail: To trap the odors of a soiled diaper in special disposable bags. Putting a soiled diaper directly into the trash can could result in quite a foul smell.
  • Snap-close outfits: To allow for fast diaper changes by giving direct access to the crotch area This is the reason why most pants and onesies for infants come with a snap closure at the crotch.

Over to You Mama

Think of diapers like you would a pair of running shoes. Your friend might have very good things to say about a certain shoe, but the same sneaker might pinch your toes. That’s the same thing with diapers, so make sure you are spending money on a brand that suits you and your baby.

We’d love to hear from you, mama! What do you think the best disposable diapers should look like? What diaper brand suits you? Any insight, comments, or additional tips and tricks you’d like to share with us?
